Chapter 22

“You can’t keep coming to me like this, miss.” The sweet lilting voice brought me out of my daze.

“Hey, Camilla.” I grabbed the cold rag she placed on my head and moved to sit up. I winced at the sharp pain in my side, and her tiny, human hands pressed my shoulders back into the bed. Humans were so fragile. The late afternoon light leaked through the open windows into the healing room, and I could see through her skin the red and blue veins peeking through thin hands. But it wasn’t her skin that had caught my eye. A silver ring, wrapped around a chain, dangled from under her smock as she leaned over me. It bore the same symbol that Anya had drawn for me. She noticed my lingering gaze and quickly tucked it back, hiding it from view.

“Your ribs are still mending, Miss. I need you to lie down for at least another hour, so they heal properly. Otherwise, you’ll be stuck with sharp pains in your side until it’s re-broke and reset.”

I sighed. She was right; it was better to wait it out. Fae healed fast, but healing broken bones still took time. I closed my eyes, trying to ease the pain in my head, but it was no use. I’d have to wait for that one out too. “Any chance you have more of that tonic from last time?” I asked.

“I already gave you some when you were brought in and used the last of it. You lot have a tendency to need it frequently. I’m sorry, Miss.”

“I understand. Thank you, Camilla.”

I heard her shuffle off to a table nearby, and I tried to sleep, but the memories of the fight kept resurfacing. It was beyond embarrassing. I knew I was terrible at wielding a sword, but it felt so much worse knowing I hadn’t been able to hold my ground against Soren. He was bigger, yes, and had years of experience on me, but I felt like I should be able to fight him. I knew it was unreasonable to expect that of myself, but I did. I was that way with many things, I needed to be the best, regardless of the task.

As I lay there, not sleeping, the image of her ring appeared again, and I knew I had to ask. “Camilla?”

“Hmmm?” She was preoccupied and didn’t look up from her desk where she was mixing some new tonic.

“Your ring, I’ve seen that symbol before…it’s for the Realm of Night, is it not?”

She sucked in a sharp breath, her eyes darting around the room in a panic. But there was no one here besides us. I would have heard breathing or a heartbeat, so I knew we were safe. She stood from her desk and came over to my side, “Miss, do not speak so loudly of such things.” Her eyes were wide and pleading. “I’m sorry, Camilla, I didn’t mean to frighten you, I just–I’ve seen that symbol starting to pop up.
